(1698-1759)
mathematician, naturalist
Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, who introduced the theories of isaac Newton to France, was born in saint-Malo. in 1736-37, he planned and led an expedition for the Academy of Sciences to Lapland to measure there the length of a meridian arc of one degree; the result, compared with a measurement made in Peru, allowed him to conclude that there was a flattening of the earth at the poles. Revising Fermat's theorem in 1744, Maupertuis presented the "principle of least resistance," which allowed the prediction of the movement of all "material points," and which constituted for him a formulation for all mechanical theory. in the field of biology, he amended the atomic theory and presented the theory of biological mutation. He also elaborated on the theory of particular heredity. Maupertuis was also interested in the origin of languages. From 1741 to 1756, he was at the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences at the invitation of King Frederick ii. Maupertuis was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1723 and to the Académie Française in 1746.
